Research
Our group’s research focus is to establish a bioactive coating that encourages osseointegration of orthopaedic implants. We collect bone marrow samples from patients undergoing hip or knee replacements and utilising a magnetic separation technique (VarioMACS, MiltenyiBiotec) isolate mesenchymal stem cells and osteo-progenitor cells. My specific interest is investigating metalloproteases (MMPs and ADAMs) and their biological inhibitors (TIMPs) and their roles as extracellular matrix (ECM) degraders and activators of growth factors and cytokines during osseointegration and bone remodelling.
